The picture posts are sparse and far between, so here is a little dip in the archive as part of me testing Lightroom 2.3 on Windows 7, no issues yet I let you know.
This is a mono conversion of the Aure Kirke, located on Nordmøre in Norway, just a few houres drive from my home town. Picture and map below.
I'm going to do some adjustments to the blog over the weekend, so you might see some weird things happening here, fear not, we're not going down, just some maintenance and polish to make the blog a bit more friendly.
One new thing you'll see is a new 'Categories'-module on the right, I've missed that since leaving WordPress, but now it is here. I'm not sure where in the module stack I'm going to put it, but it'll be there.
I'm probably gonna do some CSS-adjustments also, so you'll see some borders here and there, just an easy way to debug my CSS.
Are you one of those that's not nailing exposure with your D700?, I certainly am, but now that I've found UniWB for the D700, things are shaping up. This is a great and simple tool to get real control over your exposure, and to really use the histogram as intended.
So what is Uniwb?, well, it is very simple. It is a NEF-file set to be neutral by using a WB preset in your camera. This preset will always have a neutral histogram, in any light condition. So it is easy to judge correct exposure using the camera histogram.
UniWB is for people shooting RAW, believe me, you would not want the white balance that UniWB uses on all your JPG's (Cyan/green/beige/orange-ish, horrible actually), but if you shoot RAW, you will benefit tremendously by shooting with the UniWB set in your D700, and it's easy to set WB in post anyways, so this is a win-win situation for the RAW-shooter.
You can get the UniWB file here. You than need to copy that file to your camera, here's the procedure:
Copy it to your CF-card (into the 'Playback'-folder, root of CF-card won't work unless you configure the playback folder to 'ALL')
Insert the card into your D700
Now you need to copy the WB-information from the UniWB file into a preset in your D700. Use this procedure:
Go into the Shooting menu, select 'White Balance -> PRE Preset Manual' and press Right on the multi selector
Select a preset bank (I use d-1) and press the center button of the multi selector
Go down to 'Select image', and choose the image you just downloaded
Almost done. You now need to set the camera to PRE and d-1 (or any of the d-1 to d-4) white balance preset banks. So press and hold the WB-button and dial in PRE, still holding the WB-button set the front dial to the 'd-1 to d-4' bank you copied the UniWB to.
There you go, now you can shoot photographs with fine control over your exposure. You could take it a bit further by zero out Picture Styles, the more neutral the better.
Hope this helps you in your quest for better exposure.
I big thank you to Iliah Borg for creating the D700 UniWB file.
Things are crawling slowly at the moment. It was back in June 2008 that I mentioned that I was working on some Zoomify galleries, not that it is much work or anything, but the culling process took longer than I thought (how's that for a lame excuse?). But now I think I'm ready to go, so in the next few weeks you'll see some Zoomify galleries. They are cool, and will make a nice addition to the site. I don't own Photoshop CS4, so I have to use Zoomify Express 4, the result will be the same though.
The first images will be some old images, but soon I'm going to get some shots with the Übernice Nikkor AF-S 14-24 ƒ2.8, that should be interesting. It looks like there's some nice weather heading this way, so if I'm lucky we'll have some images with a nice clear sky, maybe even stitched to get an even wider view. So check back in a few weeks, by then I hope they'll be in place.
You gotta love Moose Peterson. I found some really nice tips in these videos on how to clean your gear. You should watch them, you might pick up a tip or two.
